SPIE Secures Bolton Council Refurbishment Contract

SPIE UK has been appointed Principal Contractor for the upgrade and refurbishment works to Smithills Hall, a Grade I listed Manor House in Bolton which dates back to the 14th Century.

The contract, appointed by Bolton Council and valued at up to £500,000, includes specialist internal, external and conservation works to sympathetically refurbish and upgrade areas that date back hundreds of years. Works commenced in early February and will last for 12 weeks.
 
The estate is one of the oldest and best-preserved manor houses in the North West of England. Due to the nature of the works and significant conservation elements, SPIE is collaborating with the client’s architect, the building users and local community to ensure that the history of the building remains perfectly preserved.
 
Cllr Cliff Morris, Leader of Bolton Council said: “Smithills Hall is such a fantastic, historical and well-used building, so it’s really good to see it benefiting from a refurbishment that will restore it to its former glory. Bolton Council selected SPIE from a number of contractors. We are delighted with the work so far and know that they will deliver a high standard refurbishment on this significant local landmark.”
 
Steve Gibbs, Facilities Services Managing Director at SPIE UK, added: “Smithills Hall provides a fascinating history of the many, many people who have lived there from its original construction in the 1300s, through the addition of numerous extensions and the changing of hands, from privately owned to public in 1938.  This is a wonderful project to be involved in and we look forward to working with Bolton Council.”
 
The internal works will see the ornamental parquet flooring, oak panelling and ornamental ceilings restored to their Victorian glory. In addition, SPIE will oversee the replacement of fittings to restore the heritage significance of the internal spaces.

SPIE is also involved with external works, which include repairs to the roof and chimney, as well as specialist repairs to timber windows and external lime render.
